LA ENTRADA DE VISTA HERMOSA english version
La Entrada de Vista Hermosa is a small alley bordering the barrio ¨Las Victorias” in the town of Jocotenango, near Antigua Guatemala. It was severely damaged by hurricane Stan in 2005 which killed many, left even more homeless and severely damaged the settlement's infrastructure.
But even before it was a troubled neighborhood with little or no perspectives for its inhabitants, with an incredibly high murder and crime rate, alcohol and drug abuse. Guatemalans still live in the shadow of a 36 year long civil war which left many kids without parents, families were misplaced and a huge number of people tries to make it to the North, escaping for a better life.
Because of the armed conflict, not many have confidence and/or respect in military and police forces. Corruption defines the relation between drug traffickers and the political elite and while millions of dollars are made by shipping drugs from South America though Guatemala to the USA, the country drowns in poverty.
Jocotenango is home to street gangs, it's members getting through their daily lives by commiting criminal acts such as armed robberies, kidnapping extortions and drug trafficking. There are a lot of guns and drugs in the streets and there’s little help coming from the government to improve the situation. It only takes you 10 minutes to get a gun, crack is available on almost every street corner.
The gang problem is now internationally recognized as a threat to society, it fills the daily papers and keeps nations scared. Some Central American governments reacted to the enormous growth of gangs (“maras” or “pandillas”) and gang related violence with the “mano dura” (firm hand) policy to crack down on gangs by making membership ( or even having a tattoo) illegal. Prisons were overflowing and the gangs went into hiding. But they´re still recruiting new members (as of 9 years old) and so continue to grow. In the wrong barrio, it can be very hard not to be “jumped” into a gang.
There are no prevention- or rehabilitation programs run by the government but a growing number of deadly attacs on the youth by paramilitary "security" groups. They search the barrios for youngsters at night and take them to a quiet place for execution. This happened at least five times while these pictures were taken. These kids weren't gang members.. just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Most of the boys that you see in this exhibition with have or had gang relations, most spent time inside prisons and juvenile correction facilities while doing the documentary. Once put in prison, they find themselves exposed to "hard core" gangsters , always looking for new recruits.
This photo documentary is an attempt to document the social conditions that Guatemalan teenagers experience.

La Entrada de Vista Hermosa es un pequeño callejón que rodea el barrio “Las Victorias” en el pueblo de Jocotenango, cerca de la ciudad de Antigua, Guatemala, el cual fue severamente dañado por el huracán Stan en 2005, dejando muchos muertos, a gente sin hogar y daños estructurales.
Pero ya desde antes este barrio venía sufriendo de una casi nula perspectiva para sus habitantes, con una muy alta tasa de delincuencia, asesinatos y abuso de alcohol y drogas. Los Guatemaltecos aún viven en la sombra de 36 años de una larga guerra civil que dejó a muchos niños huérfanos, familias desintegradas y a un gran número de gente buscando inmigrar al norte para escapar a una “mejor vida”. Debido al conflicto armado, casi nadie tiene respeto por la fuerza policiaca o militar. La corrupción define la relación entre traficantes de drogas y la elite política, mientras que millones de dólares del tráfico de drogas de Sudamérica a los Estados Unidos pasan por Guatemala, el país se sigue sumiendo en la pobreza.
Jocotenango es hogar de pandillas callejeras, sus miembros viven diariamente de cometer actos criminales como robos a mano armada, secuestros, extorsiones y tráfico de drogas. Hay muchas armas y drogas en las calles pero muy poca ayuda del gobierno para ayudar a mejorar la situación. Tan sólo toma 10 minutos el conseguir un arma, y el crack prácticamente está disponible en cada esquina.
El problema de las pandillas es prácticamente internacional, reconocido como una amenaza para la sociedad, mantiene llenos los diarios y mantiene a las naciones asustadas. Algunos gobiernos Centroamericanos han reaccionado al enorme crecimiento de las pandillas o “Maras” y la relación con la política de “Mano Dura” para romper a las pandillas … Las prisiones estaban a su máxima capacidad y las pandillas cada vez mas clandestinas. Pero siguen reclutando nuevos miembros (desde los nueve años de edad) para seguir creciendo. En el barrio bravo es muy difícil no caer a formar parte de una pandilla.
No hay programas de prevención o rehabilitación del gobierno, pero hay un creciente número de muertes por ataques de los grupos de seguridad paramilitares. Por las noches ellos buscan a jóvenes en los barrios para ejecutarlos. Esto sucedió por lo menos en cinco ocasiones en el tiempo en que se tomaron estas fotos. Estos jóvenes no eran miembros de pandillas… solo les toco vivir en el lugar y en el momento equivocado.
La mayoría de los niños que ven en esta exhibición tienen o tuvieron relación con pandillas, la mayoría pasaron un tiempo en prisión y en la correccional juvenil mientras se hizo este documental. Estando en la prisión están expuestos a ser reclutados nuevamente por pandilleros.
Este documental fotográfico es un intento por documentar las condiciones sociales y las experiencias de los jóvenes guatemaltecos.
